Will an on-demand world, in which viewers can watch what they want when they want, drive schedulers to therapy?
Television executives say traditional network schedules will remain the dominant programming paradigm for some time. But HBO’s series “In Treatment” may provide a look into the future.
The critically acclaimed series starring Gabriel Byrne averaged 2 million viewers per episode.
The wrinkle: HBO says only 12% of them saw episodes in the weeknight prime-time slots in which they made their debuts.
HBO airs its shows multiple times, on its main network and its multiplex channels. Most of the people who watched “In Treatment”—68%, in fact—watched it during a subsequent airing.
Another 9% saw it on digital video recorders. Another 7% watched the show on HBO On-Demand through their cable operators and another 4% saw the show through a digital provider, including HBO.com, iTunes, Amazon Unbox or an affiliated Web Site.
Subscribers will be able to watch more shows online as HBO for Broadband rolls out.
“We create programs that we think people want to watch, and then we let them watch where and when and how they want,” said Dave Baldwin, executive VP of program planning at HBO. “If I were scheduling one of the major networks, contemplating the changes in platforms and technology, I would look to get my resume in order and try to get out of there.”
Not so fast, say other network schedulers.
“The majority of people still watch television the old-fashioned way,” said Preston Beckman, executive VP of strategic program planning and research at Fox. “That doesn’t mean it’s always going to be that way. But I believe that in the short run, or as long as I have to worry about it, which is another three or four years, what I do I have to do the way I’ve always done it.”

Chicago officials say there was no damage detected here from the quake.
However, some 200 city inspectors were dispatched to check “key locations” such as the Navy Pier Ferris wheel and construction cranes.
Janet Clem, 37, looks at the damage to her home in Mt. Carmel, Ill. Friday morning April 18, 2008 after the 5.2 early morning earth quake. The quake is believed to have involved the Wabash fault, about six miles north of Mount Carmel.
The city’s Department of Transportation also examined bridges and viaducts but reported no damage. The CTA inspected its rail lines and reported no damage.
In Chicago, city operators fielded about 300 calls from concerned residents.
City officials recommended that homeowners examine foundations, basements and walls for cracks or any other signs of damage.

CBS affiliate WKYT-27 has snapped up local traffic guru Officer Don Evans from rival WLEX-18.
Former WLEX sports anchor Ryan Lemond will also be joining WKYT as a fill-in sports anchor and reporter.
Evans’ switch comes as the market’s top two TV news stations changed radio partners earlier this year and recently finalized questions about Evans’ affiliation. WKYT is now connected only with stations owned by Clear Channel, which also broadcasts Evans’ work. WLEX is now affiliated with Cumulus.
Evans will begin doing morning and afternoon traffic reports for WKYT on Thursday.
“He’s one of those people who has instant name recognition in this market for doing traffic,” said WKYT News Director Robert Thomas.
Stacy Ellison, who currently provides WKYT’s traffic coverage, will expand to reporting, which was her background before coming to the station, Thomas said.
WLEX General Manager Tim Gilbert said the station is considering whether to replace Evans.
And while Evans will be a daily presence on WKYT, Lemond’s work will be sporadic, Thomas said.
“I thought he did an exceptional job doing sports on WLEX,” Thomas said.
Lemond had worked for WLEX for 11 years before departing last year to pursue real estate sales full-time.
He said the WKYT offer appealed to him because it allows him to work on his schedule, giving him time to spend with his children and his real estate job.
The station’s affiliation with UK Athletics also offers lots of opportunities, Lemond said.
He said he’s kicked around story ideas to report and air during the crucial February Nielsen ratings period.
Evans could not be reached for comment.

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Anthony Breeze’s tip-in with 3 seconds left was the difference in Coastal Carolina’s 56-55 win over High Point on Monday which included a disputed finish.
After Breeze’s putback of Logan Johnson’s missed layup, the Panthers (14-12, 6-6 Big South Conference) raced the ball down the floor and an official called a foul on Eugene Harris’ driving layup attempt as time expired.
The officials then huddled before ruling the foul came after the buzzer, giving Coastal Carolina (13-12, 6-6) its second win over High Point this season.
Jack Leasure had 15 points and six rebounds, Phil Wallace added 13 points and Mario Sisinni scored 11 for the Chanticleers.
Arizona Reid had 17 points and eight rebounds for High Point and became the Big South’s career rebounding leader with 960. Harris added 14 points, but the Panthers could not hold onto a 10-point first-half lead.
