KIRKLAND – It’s not that the intricate subtleties of blocking are not exciting or important, but when it already has been determined that the first pick of today’s NFL draft will be an offensive tackle there is not a lot of room for athletic flights of fancy.
Indeed, among today’s top 10 picks, seven are projected to be defensive players, with only Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden giving this draft a touch of flair.
Michigan tackle Jake Long already has negotiated a five-year, $57.75 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, leaving little drama for who will chosen with the first pick.
Thereafter, the majority of the picks will be a who’s who of defensive linemen.
“I think overall draft-wise maybe it is average,” Seahawks vice president of player personnel Ruston Webster said of this year’s talent. “I think there is pretty good depth at certain positions. Out of every draft there are always players that come out of the later rounds. But I would say overall it is an average draft.”
This is the first year the NFL is changing the draft’s format, going from three rounds the first day to just two, with the remaining five rounds on Sunday. Also, there will be only 10 minutes between picks in the first round instead of 15 minutes, decisions driven primarily by television ratings.
Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell said teams have had to adjust accordingly, holding discussions about potential trades beforehand to map out possibilities.
“We have gone 25 years the old way,” Ruskell said. “But there are times when it drags. That can be tough. It will be a different tempo. We have to get used to it. But I think it was a good change. I think it was necessary.”

What is the flying costs of The Thunderbirds per year? What is the flying cost per hour of the F-16? Please give me lots of your money so I can buy expensive gas and go joyriding too.

I am definitely going on Saturday. My daddy used to take me to see them perform at Ft. Bragg when I was a little girl and it was so loud and fun! Brings back happy childhood memories!

I go to all kinds of air shows and saw the F-22 raptor demonstration in Oshkosh last year. I never imaged an airplane could do what this plane/pilot did. If you get the chance go see the show just for that. It literally had little kids crying and scared the bejesus out of me too, awesome!

KidYendor, you’re an absolute jackass. Air shows are wonderful spectacles where citizens can see awesome aircraft performing amazing feats. They also demonstrate the strength and precision of our nation’s military, so another benefit is that they instill pride, patriotism, and a sense of security to people in this nation. If they weren’t doing air shows, they’d still be burning gas for exercises and training. Use your brain before you write such tripe.

Earth Day 2008

Earth Day brings environmental awareness to the forefront of our attention, reminding us to be conscious of our choices everyday. Do something - get active today. There’s plenty of information at www.earthday.net about how one can promote planetary health through consumer and political choices.
One aspect of ecological awareness is education. We choose the books we consume, and with that in mind I’d like to call your attention to American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau, published today by The Library of America.
Edited by author and green activist, Bill McKibben, American Earth collects essays from classic conservationist voices such as Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and Aldo Leopold with contemporary authors like David Quammen, Barbara Kingsolver, and Michael Pollan. It’s truly a definitive volume born in the historical connection between environmental writing and activism. Learn more at www.americanearth.org, where you can get a copy for yourself or donate one to a library or school.

Chicago officials say there was no damage detected here from the quake.
However, some 200 city inspectors were dispatched to check “key locations” such as the Navy Pier Ferris wheel and construction cranes.
Janet Clem, 37, looks at the damage to her home in Mt. Carmel, Ill. Friday morning April 18, 2008 after the 5.2 early morning earth quake. The quake is believed to have involved the Wabash fault, about six miles north of Mount Carmel.
The city’s Department of Transportation also examined bridges and viaducts but reported no damage. The CTA inspected its rail lines and reported no damage.
In Chicago, city operators fielded about 300 calls from concerned residents.
City officials recommended that homeowners examine foundations, basements and walls for cracks or any other signs of damage.

In 2008, the Philadelphia Eagles face perhaps their last chance to shoot for a Super Bowl in the Donovan McNabb era. Over the last few years, the Eagles schedule seems to suggest some easy wins in the first half of the season, and some very tough games in the second half. But slower starts and big finishes have been the Eagles traditional pattern. In the coming NFL season, the Eagles face a tough beginning and a tough end to their schedule.
On Opening Day, the Eagles open at home against the Rams, a team that the Eagles can easily beat. More difficult match ups in the coming weeks include a Monday Night game at Dallas in Week 2, a home game against the Steelers in Week 3, and a Sunday night game at Chicago in Week 4. Games on October 12′th at San Francisco and October 26′th vs Atlanta could provide a relief. The Eagles close out the first half of the schedule visiting the always tough Seattle Seahawks in Week 9.
In the second half of the schedule, the Eagles host the Super Bowl champion Giants on a Sunday night during Week 10, and visit them in Week 14. Weeks 11 and 12 have the Eagles facing AFC doormats Cincinnati and Baltimore, followed by a very rare Thanksgiving Day home game against Arizona. To end the season, the Eagles once again close out with games against NFC East foes, as they visit the Redskins on December 21’st and host Dallas on the final week.
The Eagles schedules features at least six to eight games they should be able to win against inferior competition. Their six games against NFC East rivals can go either way, as always. The Week 2 and 3 games against Dallas and Pittsburgh can establish the Eagles as a legitimate contender, or set the stage for another year where they struggle at .500. The Eagles have struggled to reach fast starts over the last few years, but with their window of opportunity almost slammed shut, starting off right will be very important. Still, other than the Steelers, no other AFC powerhouse team is in the Eagles schedule, and they are capable of beating any team in the NFC at any given time.

UMCOR Hotline for April 15, 2008

In Today’s Hotline:
SIERRE LEONE: SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT MALARIA
Henrietta Emmanuel has a big job - getting the word out about malaria throughout Sierre Leone, West Africa. She travels to several schools and villages as part of the Community-Based Malaria Control Program at Kissy United Methodist Hospital. In addition to teaching people about the importance of preventing malaria, she has developed a series of educational materials that explains malaria, its causes, symptoms, and treatments in simple, basic terms.
Public health posters decorate the walls at Taiama Clinic, one of the six clinics Kissy Hospital works with throughout Sierra Leone. Each poster displays prevention methods and treatment of malaria and illustrates how much medicine to administer a child. Patients are also encouraged to use treated bed nets.
Malaria kills one of five children in Africa. The Malaria Program however, is generating optimistic results with Kissy Hospital and a clinic in Manjama seeing a decrease in the number of patients that have malaria. Help programs like these continue by sending your gifts to Malaria Control, UMCOR Advance #982009.
*Mark, an asylee from Haiti, was separated from his family for two long years due to his immigration status. With guided counsel and support from UMCOR’s Justice for Our Neighbors program (JFON), Mark completed the lengthy paperwork process and secured his legal status. Now that he has a green-card, his wife and two children have been able to join him in the US.
JFON works with entire families to help reunite family members. They help families stay in the US and make them aware of all the benefits and opportunities that are available to them. The program provides free, professional legal services to immigrants in monthly clinics and helps asylum seekers and immigrants navigate the rules and laws that affect their lives here in the US.

It’s been a good week for Trent Reznor, who — if he hasn’t already — can now add “millionaire” to his list of credentials.
Reznor has netted a total of $1,619,420 US ($1,593,833 CAD) from sales of Ghosts I-IV, Nine Inch Nails’ self-released instrumental album, which came out on March 2 through NIN’s website. In total, 781,917 people shelled out some dough or downloaded a copy for free. This was spurred by sales of Ghosts I-IV’s “ultra-deluxe limited edition,” of which only 2,500 copies were pressed. Copies of that edition, autographed by Reznor, would have cost you $300 a pop, but are now sold out. U.K rock mag Kerrang! estimates Reznor pocketed $750,000 U.S (about $738,000 CAD) from the sales of the ultra-deluxe limited edition alone.
Nine Inch Nails also plan to turn the Ghosts I-IV album into a “film festival” of sorts. In cooperation with YouTube, Reznor is encouraging fans to create videos using tracks from Ghosts I-IV’s and add their own visuals. Fans can check out the Nine Inch Nails YouTube channel later today for more information on how to submit their videos. A team including Reznor will judge the submissions and pick their favourites, which will be broadcast at a virtual film festival sometime in the future. Reznor says broadcast TV specials or a one-off live performance of Ghosts I-IV using fans’ videos may also stem from the project.
“Early in the project we thought it would be interesting to see what the community could create / collaborate on as a reaction to the music we were making,” Reznor wrote today in a post on his website. “This isn’t a contest and you don’t win elaborate prizes — it’s meant to be an experiment in collaboration and a chance for us to interact beyond the typical one-way artist-to-fan relationship.”

its not the same considering it was always headlined by jane’s addiction. because they broke up they wont play….and perry, jane’s addictions lead singer, would never do it.
It was not always headlined by JA. I went to the first 4 (+ the one in 97) and only the first one was headlined by JA. Other headliners included Pumpkins, Primus, Metallica, Chili Peppers and Devo.
I got to see Tool on shrooms the year that Devo headlined. We had great seats at Alpine Valley and Tool had huge video screens with elephants humping. It was craziness. Then Tool busted into No Quarter and I was one with the universe.

97 was definately this festivals best year with tool, tricky, orbital, devo, prodigy, the orb, and lastly, a band called korn that didnt suck half as bad as what they do now, for “life is peachy” ………….oh yea, and snoop dogg, but he doesnt count as a musician!!!!!
Fuck that. I’ll take the first year’s line up over any of em. However, that is the first time I saw NIN and they gave me a headache THIS BIG! Saw this show at Tinley Park in IL.
Jane’s Addiction, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice T & Body Count, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band, Violent Femmes.
I also liked the 4th line up. Also saw this one at Tinley Park.
Primus, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr, Fishbone, Arrested Development, Front 242, Babes in Toyland, Tool, Rage Against the Machine

The WWE website streamed the earlier inductions live tonight. You can read my coverage of those inductions by clicking here. The following are notes on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson inducting Rocky Johnson and Peter Maivia, and Triple H inducting Ric Flair. This portion of the broadcast is airing live on USA Network.
-An excellent video aired with shots of countless WWE Hall of Famers and the Class of 2008.
-Todd Grisham welcomed everyone to the show and introduced Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Huge pop when his music hit. Rock out and flashed a big smile. Big cheers and “Rocky” chants once the music stopped playing.
Rock said it’s an honor to be at the Hall of Fame. He stopped himself and said something was missing. He pulled out a mic from under the podium and said, “Finally, The Rock has come back to Orlando.” The live crowd ate it up. “Damn that felt good, thank you,” he said.
He said it was great to see so many smiling faces, including Steve Austin. A shot aired of a smiling Austin. Then Rock pointed out Mick Foley. Rock said only in this business could a man pull out a sock from a crotch area, shove it down Rock’s throat, and make it a better man. Rock pointed out that Foley drew a tuxedo on his sock. “Only Mick Foley,” Rock said. “Love you, buddy.”
Rock pretended to be happy to see Jonathan Coachman, but said no one cared about him. Rock pointed out Chris Jericho and mocked his “12 year-old boy haircut.” Jericho played along by standing up and pretending to be angry. Rock called him a Backstreet Boy and said, “Love the highlights.” Jericho laughed.
Rock said Triple H is so obsessed with winning the WWE Title “that the mere thought of that somehow made Stephanie McMahon pregnant.” Stephanie laughed. Rock congratulated them on the pregnancy.

Tons of college basketball today, with all sorts of tournaments going on. Among the other highlights are an awards show so raucous that other awards shows should take lessons from it.
Stuff to watch or record
Find & Design: This one hits close to home: Felicia Pinkney, a former Star-Telegram copy editor and current contributor, and her husband Matt, a Star-Telegram graphics director, are featured in this episode of the home-makeover series. Felicia writes about the experience on Page 1E.
NCAA women’s basketball tournament: Daytime action begins with Louisville vs. North Carolina, then continues with Oklahoma State vs. Louisiana State. In the evening, Vanderbilt plays Maryland, and Pittsburgh plays Stanford. 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., ESPN; Pitt-Stanford at 10:30 p.m., ESPN2
Men’s Division II Basketball Championship: Smaller colleges such as Augusta State and Alaska-Anchorage have been competing in their own tournament, which reaches its climax this afternoon. 1:30 p.m., KTVT/Channel 11
Men’s NCAA Tournament: At press time, Thursday and Friday’s “Sweet 16″ games had yet to be played. So I can’t tell you which teams are among the “Elite Eight” playing this weekend. And given my track record with predictions in this tournament, I’m not going to guess who’s playing, either. 5:30 p.m., KTVT/Channel 11
Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2008: Kids — and likely a few adults — pick the winners in entertainment and sports categories in this rambunctious awards show. Not only does it have performances by Miley Cyrus and the Naked Brothers Band, but it’s got slime! 7 p.m., NICK
Save Our History: Written in Bone: What was once the History Channel is now just History, but the offerings haven’t changed that much: This program follows forensic anthropologist Dr. Doug Owsley as he investigates the clues left behind by human remains from as recently as 2004 and from as far back as the 17th century.
