The United States said there were no serious injuries in the crash of an American-owned Boeing 747 cargo plane carrying diplomatic cargo at Brussels airport.
State Department spokeswoman Jessica Simon said there were no significant injuries to the five crew aboard the Kalitta Air jet when it crashed during takeoff, breaking apart into three pieces at the end of the runway.
“The cause of the accident is unknown,” Simon said.
She said the US embassy in Brussels had secured the diplomatic materials aboard the plane, which was on the way to Bahrain.
She also said the US National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were dispatching a team to Brussels to help investigate the cause of the crash.

Live and let DIY

Just over 40 years ago in a recording studio in Kingston, Jamaica, a sound engineer named Byron Smith was busy cutting a new song, On The Beach by the Paragons. Recording straight from the master tape on to an acetate disc, also known as a dubplate, the track was for a local deejay named Ruddy Redwood to play at a dance that evening. In his haste, Smith forgot to pan up the vocals on the mixing desk, cutting just the backing track on to the dubplate, and accidentally recording the world’s first “12-inch instrumental”. Apologising for his mistake, Smith was about to throw the faulty disc out when Redwood stopped him. Intrigued by the instrumental version, he took it with him. That night, using two turntables, he switched between the original mix and the vocal-less version of the song, giving the MC more room to manoeuvre and the crowd space to sing along between verses, sending them crazy in the process and hacking the structure of a song live for the first time. That night the crowd made him play the dubplate so many times it got completely worn out. The remix was born.
Forty years later, the idea behind the remix is everywhere you look. Video game code is deliberately left unlocked so fans can tweak and improve it. Boeing’s new Dreamliner airplane was designed in collaboration with 120,000 volunteers who signed up to help through the corporation’s website. Companies like Facebook that are based on user-generated content are worth more than manufacturing giants like Ford. People have their cars “remixed” on MTV’s Pimp My Ride, while people are busy illicitly re-editing and reposting television clips online every day. Thanks to the efforts of people like Ruddy Redwood pushing new ideas from the fringes of pop culture, the way we use information looks very different today.

What is the flying costs of The Thunderbirds per year? What is the flying cost per hour of the F-16? Please give me lots of your money so I can buy expensive gas and go joyriding too.

I am definitely going on Saturday. My daddy used to take me to see them perform at Ft. Bragg when I was a little girl and it was so loud and fun! Brings back happy childhood memories!

I go to all kinds of air shows and saw the F-22 raptor demonstration in Oshkosh last year. I never imaged an airplane could do what this plane/pilot did. If you get the chance go see the show just for that. It literally had little kids crying and scared the bejesus out of me too, awesome!

KidYendor, you’re an absolute jackass. Air shows are wonderful spectacles where citizens can see awesome aircraft performing amazing feats. They also demonstrate the strength and precision of our nation’s military, so another benefit is that they instill pride, patriotism, and a sense of security to people in this nation. If they weren’t doing air shows, they’d still be burning gas for exercises and training. Use your brain before you write such tripe.

Denver, CO (AHN) - A gun belonging to the pilot of a US Airways plane went off as the aircraft was approaching an airport over the weekend. It was for the first time that a weapon issued under a federal program to arm pilots was fired “accidentally”, authorities said.
The plane landed safely in North Carolina on Saturday and no one was injured. The Federal Air Marshal Service says the pilot of Flight 1536 from Denver to Charlotte did not endanger the aircraft or the 124 passengers.
There were two pilots and three flight attendants aboard, said Greg Alter of the Federal Air Marshal Service. Pilots and other flight attendants are allowed to use a firearm to defend against any act of air piracy or criminal violence after the September 11 attacks.
The Transportation Security Administration and Federal Aviation Administration is investigating how the gun discharged and if the plane is now safe. The Airbus A319 has been removed from service now.

Not Putting It All Together

Posted by Butler Shaffer at March 31, 2008 10:45 AM
CNN just had two back-to-back news reports. The first told of Aloha Airlines terminating all of its passenger service, due to financial difficulties. The second story told of the efforts of the U.S. and many European governments to eliminate the restrictions on airlines from one country flying to another. Now, CNN chirped, an American airline could schedule flights from New York to London as freely as it now flies from New York to Chicago. European airlines could schedule flights from London to Los Angeles with the same facility.
These reports could have provided CNN the opportunity to explain to viewers how the present plight of many airlines - as well as other businesses - stems from the restrictive and costly consequences of government regulation. What was presented as a creative effort by Western governments to deal with airline difficulties amounted to nothing more than the “bold” effort to enhance profitability by having governments get out of the way of those seeking profits!
What, instead, did CNN report on immediately after these two? The story of a dog that had been thrown off an overpass and survived!
