Black bear continues to elude DEM

NARRAGANSETT — “He’s probably somewhere sleeping,” said Steven H. Hall, chief of the DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement, about the black bear last spotted in a heavily populated neighborhood off Route 1A.
“It’s been pretty quiet the last couple of hours,” Hall said yesterday afternoon, though he was still considering calls that came in earlier in the day from Saunderstown, about three miles north, where two residents said they spotted a bear.
It had him wondering, he said, if there might be two bears on the run.
“We don’t know if it’s the same bear.”
A Narragansett police officer was the last one to see a bear, early yesterday in the Mettatuxet area. Hall said there were reports of a bear in the immediate area of Mettatuxet, including in the parking lot of an apartment complex and on the other side of Route 1A.
Yesterday morning, about a half dozen Department of Environmental Management police officers gathered in the parking lot of Twin Willows on Boston Neck Road. A bear trap had been brought to the area.
“We’re trying to keep track of him,” said DEM Officer John R. Gingerella, who took a photo of the bear on Tuesday after it had crossed Narrow River from South Kingstown.
Reports of bear sightings started coming in to the DEM more than a week ago starting in Glocester, Hall said. Calls continued from Scituate, Coventry, West Greenwich, South Kingstown and Narragansett, where officers said the bear ripped apart a bird feeder and was seen on several streets.
Once word got out about the bear, Gingerella said, crowds gathered.
“There were so many people it became like a parade setting.”
Gingerella guessed that the runaway bear is “a teenage boy looking for his own place.”
Television and radio station reporters also gathered in the parking lot.

Burke and colleagues also assessed the association of obesity with traditional cardiovascular risk factors and with subclinical vascular markers. They found a higher body-mass index (BMI) was associated with more adverse levels of blood pressure (BP), lipids, and fasting glucose and more subclinical disease despite a high prevalence of pharmacologic treatment for these disorders.
“Fifteen to 20 years ago, people said obesity was not an independent risk factor for heart disease, and when they did that, they basically said that obesity doesn’t matter because all you need to do is treat their hypertension, and if their LDL is high, treat that, and have them not smoke and they’re going to be okay,” Burke continued. “What we are finding is that that’s not true. For the first time in human history we are seeing a generation with a lot of obesity age into older adulthood, where we often see a lot of chronic diseases. The ability of the medical care system to treat that many people—it just doesn’t work.”
Burke and colleagues analyzed data from MESA, which involved 6814 individuals aged 45 to 84 who did not have CVD when the study began (2000 to 2002). They assessed the association between body size and CVD risk factors, medication use, and subclinical vascular disease by measuring coronary artery calcium (CAC), carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT), and left ventricular mass.
A large proportion of white, African American, and Hispanic participants were overweight (60% to 85%) or obese (30% to 50%), while fewer Chinese Americans were overweight (33%) or obese (5%).
Burke commented: “For an awfully long time we have been looking at data from Hispanics, whites, and African Americans and saying, ‘Well, you know, black women have greater obesity than white women,’ but when you throw the Chinese into the equation, those three groups actually look very similar; they look almost identical. We see huge amounts of obesity in the other racial ethnic groups [apart from the Chinese] that are not acceptable.”

QUICK DRAWS

“Indiana Jones”? Check. “Batman”? Yep. Will Smith? Him too. There will be no shortage of box-office draws during the 2008 summer movie season, which is so loaded with potential blockbusters that it may surpass last year’s record-setting summer grosses of $4.15 billion, the highest in Hollywood history.
That is no guarantee the movies themselves will be good, of course: Just because they’ve made another “Hulk” picture doesn’t mean it will be any better. But at least on paper, the 2008 summer movie lineup certainly looks formidable.
Here is a partial list of the many movies heading our way between now and Labor Day.
“The Chronicles of Narnia:Prince Caspian”: The next installment in author C. S. Lewis’ fantasy series about the magical realm of Narnia is set a year after the events of the first film, which translates into 1,300 years in Narnia- time. Once again, the four Pevensie siblings play a key role in helping the denizens of the land fight off evil forces, etc.
“Indiana Jones and the Kingdomof the Crystal Skull”: Almost 20 years after the last Indy film, Harrison Ford picks up his whip and leather jacket for more old-school, serial-matinee adventure. Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas took their sweet time coming up with a script everyone liked, setting aside the Nazi villains of the first and third films for Cold War-era Russkies, led by a raven-haired Cate Blanchett. Karen Allen and Shia LaBeouf co-star.
“Sex and the City”: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis are all back. As the girls’ lives move on four years from where we left them on HBO, there are new and older offspring and a pending wedding for Carrie and Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Early reviews are through the roof, and so is the fashion. The four friends are still juggling jobs, relationships and the joys of New York City. Fans of Jason Lewis (Smith) will be happy to hear that he’ll be back, and the film is rated R— so it’ll be just as raunchy as ever.

Jobs WWDC keynote all but confirmed

While there still hasn’t been an official announcement from Apple (as of this writing), Fortune has reported that Steve Jobs will don the black shirt and blue jeans to deliver a keynote address on June 9, kicking off WWDC ‘08.
It’s not a surprise, of course, as Steve typically talks during the show. Also expected is the announcement of a 3G iPhone, as well as plans for international distribution, as rumors have been at their usual pre-event levels for a couple of weeks.
If you can’t wait for all of the fun to begin, download the Countdown to WWDC Dashboard widget and stare at it obsessively.

The following are the leading stories in Maltese and foreign newspapers:
The Times says that Brussels expects spring hunting to stop once and for all. The paper also reveals that Thursday’s murder victim was shot twice in the head.
On the issue of spring hunting, The Malta Independent says the European Court of Justice assessed the European Commission case against Malta as "well founded".
Il-Gens Illum also leads with the spring hunting issue but it also refers to the forthcoming visit by the Archbishop to Brussels and Luxembourg next month and the current visit to Detroit by the Bishop of Gozo.
In-Nazzjon leads with the report by Business Europe which sees Malta economic climate as sound. The paper also says that there have been no developments in the Birkirkara murder case.
l-orizzont leads with the murder case and asks whether the police have established the motive for the Mafia-style killing. It also quotes GWU Secretary General Tony Zarb saying that the union would work with any MLP leader who respects it and its officials.
The Press in Britain…
The effects of a two-day strike at Scotland’s largest oil refinery is featured in six of Britain’s newspapers this morning. The giant Grangemouth oil refinery has been closed down ahead of the strike by 1,200 workers in a row over pensions which threatens fuel supplies. BP has also started making preparations to close down a pipeline that delivers 30 percent of the UK’s daily oil output and which relies on power from Grangemouth.
The Daily Mail reports that if one can find petrol, it’s becomingly even more expensive.
The Scotsman says the Unite union, whose members are on strike over their pension schemes, is fighting a political battle at the refinery. It pictures a young man holding before him a T-shirt with the slogan "Fighting for our Pension".

EBay Inc. says it's cutting 125 jobs in Europe and North America, including 70 positions at the online auctioneer's headquarters in San Jose, Calif.
Company spokesman Jose Mallabo says the work force reduction is part of a reorganization to streamline operations _ not cut costs. He says the cuts amount to less than 1 percent of the company's global head count of 15,500 people.
Mallabo says the cuts in Europe are the result of a centralization of corporate functions. He wouldn't talk about what jobs were being affected at headquarters.
