“Free the Children” founders Marc and Craig Kielburger are taking their humanitarian mission to the mainstream with back-to-back-to-back TV appearances on “Oprah,” “Degrassi: The Next Generation” and “eTalk.”
Even though Craig Kielburger, 25, is a veteran public speaker, he admits to being jittery ahead of “Oprah.”.
“I was extremely nervous while I was sitting in the audience,” Kielburger says in an interview with CTV.ca. “But it’s an amazing opportunity to get our message out to millions and millions of people around the world.”
“Free The Children” helps establish innovative education and development programs in more than 45 countries. Kielburger founded “Free the Children” in 1995 at the age of 12.
Kielburger’s appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will air on Monday, May 26, and will officially launch the “O Ambassadors” project, a partnership between “Free the Children” and “Oprah’s Angel Network.”
Oprah’s giving a boost to “Free the Children” by launching “O Ambassador” clubs in schools from coast to coast.
The clubs will take part in fundraising and awareness events, and “galvanize an entire generation across North America,” says Kielburger.
According to the Thornhill, Ontario native, the difference between this project and other humanitarian groups is simple: “Most organizations just ask for money, but we’re asking people to get engaged and involve their daily lives.”
Some “O Ambassador” projects include:
Building a package of school supplies for a classroom in need
Planting a tree on school grounds
Creating “AIDS Awareness” posters
Collecting old blankets and sleeping bags for local homeless shelters
Joining Kielburger and his brother on the show are 12 student representatives from across North America who have recently joined the program.
Kielburger hopes that youths tuning into the program will be encouraged by seeing kids their own age involved with humanitarian projects.
“With Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan on nearly every screen, it’s a nice change to instead see Canadian students doing something positive in their community and giving back,” says Kielburger. “We see too few human rights activists.”

JAMIE OLIVER brought his food revolution to the Hay Festival yesterday.
The popular TV chef was greeted with a huge round of applause as he entered the Barclays Wealth Auditorium on the second day of the literary event.
Speaking to Rosie Boycott, Jamie told his large group of fans that he was still committed to improving the diets of children in Britain.
“Sixty per cent of packed lunches are worse than school dinners,” he said, adding he had come across numerous examples of five- year-olds with Red Bull and cold McDonald’s for lunch.
He also told of his frustration with the political system. “I’ve been through three education secretaries and two prime ministers. They won’t commit to a 10-year plan.”
His Fowl Dinners programme on Channel Four, which showed the reality of intensive chicken farming, has seen the sale of free range produce go up by 800%. But he insisted he was not trying to persuade the British people either way.
“I had absolute faith in the British public to make good decisions,” he said. “But we shouldn’t try and be perfect. You do your best.”
He also talked about why he wants to bring the joy of cooking back into people’s busy lives.
“Food is life, food is a great leveller. I do think food is so important. Cooking is very simple and very quick. It’s very cheap if you can cook. If you can’t, it’s a very scary place.”
The father of two, who shot to stardom with his Naked Chef series, talked about his latest project, where he was trying to teach a group of families the basics of cooking.
“On £60 a week, you can eat good dinners, lunches and a roast dinner with a free range bird. We sat around the table and we talked about life. It was like being in rehab.”

Tips to generate sales
With Mother’s Day almost here the Google AdWords Blog has some tips on converting procrastinators into customers.
Google says to create ad groups with keywords and ad text aimed specifically at Mother’s Day. Keywords to use include "mother’s day gifts" and "mother’s day gift ideas."
The AdWords Blog recommends writing "compelling ad text that features the products you offer on your web site. This invites shoppers interested in those products to click through, and prevents clicks from shoppers who aren’t interested."
The company also suggests promoting gift cards as an option for Mother’s Day. Close to 40 percent of shoppers will purchase a gift card for their mom this year, according to the National Retail Federation. Google says gift cards are delivered faster than standard packages.
Other things to do include," Extend shipping deadlines. You can convert more last-minute shoppers into customers by offering delivery options, such as overnight delivery, and free or discounted shipping. Also, it’s important to clearly inform buyers of delivery deadlines on your home page as well as on specific product pages."
Google also says to highlight gift-wrapping if you have it and to offer shoppers alternative payment options, like Google Checkout.

JONESBORO — The NFL’s Carolina Panthers announced Monday they have agreed to terms with undrafted college free agent Darren Toney of Lake Village, who completed his career as a cornerback on the Arkansas State football team last season.
Toney was one of 10 undrafted college free agents the Panthers agreed to terms with and will participate at the team’s upcoming mini-camp, Friday, May 2, through Sunday, May 4, at Bank of America Stadium.
Despite missing four games in 2007 with an injury, Toney still posted two interceptions for 32 yards and a touchdown, 27 tackles, four pass break-ups, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He recorded a career-high eight tackles against Florida International and 21 tackles over ASU’s final four games. He was part of a defensive backfield that ranked No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference and 19th in the nation in pass defense.
Toney completed his four-year career with 95 tackles and six interceptions for 111 yards. He finished his career ranked second at Arkansas State and third in Sun Belt Conference history for kickoff return yards with 1,513 to his credit. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week twice during his career.
He posted career-best numbers of 39 tackles and three interceptions in 2006 as a junior. Toney joins over 90 other all-time Arkansas State players that have signed pro contracts with an NFL franchise. While fullback Oren O’Neal and safety Tyrell Johnson were both taken in the 2007 and 2008 NFL Drafts, respectively, Toney becomes the first ASU player to sign a free agent contract with an NFL franchise since running back Shermar Bracey, quarterback Nick Noce and running back Antonio Warren all signed in 2006.

Allen, Gruden Share Post-Draft Thoughts

Bucs head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen shared their post-draft thoughts on their 2008 NFL Draft selections with the media on Sunday evening. Find out what they said about their new players, the Bucs' interest in DE Jason Taylor, potential trades and and more in this article.
The 2008 NFL Draft officially concluded on Sunday evening.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen shared their post-draft thoughts on their seven draft selections, which are listed below:
In addition, Gruden and Allen discussed Tampa Bay's interest in Miami defensive end Jason Taylor, potential trades and roster moves between now and the start of training camp on July 25.
Pewter Report shares the thoughts of Gruden and Allen below.
GENERAL MANAGER brUCE ALLEN
“We are pleased with the way the draft turned out today and yesterday. If you look at our draft it is very unusual, in the fact that we filled a need in every position of our football team. We got an offensive lineman, we got a defensive lineman, we got a defensive back, we got a quarterback, we got a running back, and a receiver. At all the key positions on a football team, we got someone we think will come in and help us compete. Obviously, we feel good with the kicking situation, we didn't do that.”
(On why they chose a quarterback)
“We like the talent of Josh. He has not good statistics, not great statistics, he has spectacular statistics. He has been coached by coaches that we are very familiar with, Johnnie Morton has said some very positive things about him, and Coach [Jim] Harbaugh has said some great things about him. We want to give him a chance to see what he can do in the NFL.”
(On the timeframe to compete for Johnson)

Ananda Krishnan due in SL

Ananda Krishnan due in SL
Maxis Malaysia boss T. Ananda Krishnan isdue in Sri Lanka this week in connectionwith the NTT/SLT deal, market sources said.
Multi-billionaire Ananda Krishnan is aMalaysian Tamil whose parents were from SriLanka.
However, it’s not clear whether Maxis, atelecoms operator in Malaysia, will buy allof NTT Japan’s 35.2% stake in SLT, or settlefor only 25%, thereby ensuring that NTTwill continue to maintain the right ofappointing/having the CEO of their choice inSLT, by ensuring that NTT will retain aminimum 10% stake in SLT as per itsshareholder agreement, they said.
Last week NTT transferred all of its 35.2%shareholding in SLT to the Colombo StockExchange CDS, a move, which market sourcesinterpreted as a prelude to this Japanesetelecoms company preparing to divest itsholdings in SLT.
SLT has a total of 1.8 billion issued shareswith the government being its biggestshareholder with a 49.2% stake. SLT, alisted company, also has a public float of15.3% of its equity.
The past few days have seen heavy trading inSLT shares on speculation that Maxis willtrigger the Securities and ExchangeCommission’s Mergers and Acquisitions Codeby buying NTT’s 35.2% stake in SLT.If aninvestor buys a minimum 30% stake in alisted company, he triggers this Code, thereby being liable to make an offer tothat company’s remaining shareholders to buytheir stakes also in the company at itshighest traded price in the one yearpreceding the date the Code was triggered.
SLT on Wednesday closed at Rs. 40.50 ashare, down 25 cents over its previousclosing price, on a volume of 6.2 millionshares. There was no trading on Thursday andFriday on account of holidays.
Market speculation is that Maxis willexecute this deal at Rs. 42 a share.
NTT bought this 35.2% stake from thegovernment in 1997 (plus management control)for US$ 225 million.
It has been reported that Maxis has beeneyeing NTT’s stake in SLT since last year,as part of its regional expansion drive. Butits buying was stalled after this issue wentto courts and was only revived earlier thismonth, after the court gave NTT thegreenlight to sell its stake in SLT if itwishes to.
