We hope you are busy preparing your 1 Full Minute entry, but if you haven’t heard about the contest, you’re in luck. Do you know a kid age 6 - 18 who can say in one full minute why they want to cheer on the Whitecaps at a new Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium? They could win a trip for four to Montreal to catch the Whitecaps vs. the Impact, in the opening game at the brand new Saputo Stadium.
The contest closes April 8, so get your entry in soon!
With training camp well under way for the men’s squad, defender Luca Bellisomo is keeping us onside with his ongoing ‘Bellisomo Blog’. Luca gives us a peak at a pro training camp, covering everything from how he kills time on the road in Seattle, to the breakfast plan that team nutritionist Jennifer Gibson created from a Denny’s menu, to Taka and Serge’s strange attempt at communication.

Brandi Chastain’s jersey-waving celebration after she scored the winning goal in the final match of 1999 World Cup was unforgettable. It was the most watched soccer game in the history of network television at the time, and Chastain inspired many young girls to pick up a soccer ball and play sports.
Now, 10 years later, she is still making her mark as a role model for youth.
Chastain was the motivational speaker for Loma Prieta Elementary School and C.T. English Middle School to encourage students to participate in the jog-a-thon in early May. She reminded students to celebrate their victories, even small ones like finishing their homework.
“I thought that it was really cool to have Brandi Chastain there and it really made
me devoted to do some more activities outside,” said fifth-grader Taylor Park. “It made me feel really happy because she was really encouraging.”
Chastain told the students about her comeback during the 1999 World Cup. After accidentally scoring on her own team during the quarter-final game against Germany, she said her teammates told her, “Let it go. It doesn’t matter. You are going to be the reason we win this game.”
Sure enough, Chastain redeemed herself. “She stood up and the other player gave her a high five, and then she scored a goal at the end of the game,” said third-grader Keaton Park. The U.S. women’s team won the game with Chastain scoring off a corner kick.
“I had teammates who believed in me,” Chastain told
the students. “You have an opportunity every day to be the person who is uplifting or be the person who is uplifted.”
Chastain’s coach relied on her to score during shootouts. However, she missed her shot against the goalkeeper from China during the preliminaries.
In her next shootout against China, in the final match of the 1999 Cup, she had to break the 4-4 tie to win the game. She said to herself, “Don’t look at the goalkeeper. Be in control of the situation.”
